What should I back up before an update?

Back up both the database and the complete site tree, including protected private storage, before a Core, module or theme update.

Updated September 30, 2026

You need both halves

The database holds content, settings and application records. The filesystem holds Core, modules, themes, uploads and protected private files. A useful rollback needs both from the same point in time.

Keep the backup somewhere other than the directory you are about to change and verify that you can access it before starting.
